As for Nāgārjuna, he was born four hundred years after our teacher died and lived for 600 years, according to the Root Tantra of Mañjuśrī (Mañjuśrīmūlatantra). 8Root Tantra of Mañjuśrī (Mañjuśrīmūlatantra, H. 501, vol. 88), 408a. His opening of the tradition of Madhyamaka free from the two extremes of existence and nonexistence was also spoken of in the Descent to Laṅka Sūtra (Laṅkāvatārasūtra).9Descent to Laṅka Sūtra (Laṅkāvatārasūtra, H. 110, vol. 51), 265a. Further, he was prophesied in other sūtras like the Twelve Thousand Great Clouds (Mahāmegha) and the Great Drum (Mahābheri).10See Tsongkhapa, Ocean of Reason, 5; English trans. in Garfield and Ngawang Samten, Ocean of Reasoning, 11. There are different accounts in these sūtras, such as his achieving the first bodhisattva ground in this life and then going on to the Land of Bliss (Sukhāvatī), his being a seventh-ground bodhisattva, and his becoming a buddha named Jñānakāraprabhā in the future. This does not conflict with Candrakīrti’s Commentary on the “Illuminating Lamp” (Pradīpoddyotanaṭīkā) that says that he achieved the state of Vajradhāra in this life because there is a difference between how things are and how things appear for trainees, and also, because it is stated these ways based on the respective perspectives of the ordinary and extraordinary vehicles.11Candrakīrti, Commentary on the “Illuminating Lamp” (Pradīpoddyotanaṭīkā, D. 1785), 200a–200b.
