[650] These are two different ways of explaining the viewpoint of the Mother Sūtras; they are not the two chariot traditions of Madhyamaka. This[p.30]The Profound Reality of Interdependence

is because the two chariot traditions of Madhyamaka and Mind-Only are determined to be the authentic chariot traditions that are commentaries on the viewpoint of the Word. This is so because the tradition of Madhyamaka set forth by Nāgārjuna, relying on the quintessential instructions of Mañjughoṣa, follows the Akṣayamati Sūtra. The tradition of Mind-Only set forth by the Noble Asaṅga, relying on the quintessential instructions of Lord Maitreya, follows the Sūtra Explaining the Intent (Saṃdhinirmocanasūtra). Thus, relying on the Mahāyāna Sūtras, these two masters ascertained the ways of distinguishing what is provisional and definitive in meaning (drang nges) with numerous scriptures and reasonings; thereby, they initiated the distinct traditions of Madhyamaka and Mind-Only. Secondarily, they explained the respective positions of Madhyamaka and Mind-Only regarding the viewpoint of the Hīnayāna Sūtras as well. They also clearly and completely laid out the stages of practice of the profound and vast Mahāyāna path. Before then, the Disciple schools were thriving, while the view and training of Mahāyāna was faltering. Afterward, the Mahāyāna teachings swelled like water in a summer lake. Thus, the immense kindness they showed the teaching is pervasive, like that of our teacher himself.
