| English | Also, in accord with the intended meaning of the Meeting of the Father and Son Sūtra, the Victor’s child, Śāntideva, showed that based on the six elements that are the basis of designation for a being, a being does not exist other than as a mere imputation; it is like an illusion. Even so, he claims that conventionally, there is a difference in the status of a mind’s existence in an actual being and an illusory being, and also a difference in the status of the evil deed’s existence for killing one of them. In our text here, it is shown many times that everything is merely a nominal designation, like an illusion, such as: [IX.9a] The illusory Victors . . . 9.9, [IX.9c] “If beings are like illusions . . . ,” 9.9 and, [IX.11a] In killing an illusory being . . . . 9.11 Nevertheless, he shows that everything can be distinguished, such as the difference between having a mind or not. In this one should know the essential point of there being no contradiction between the claim made above—that there is no division between a correct and incorrect conventional truth in this Madhyamaka system—and the explanation in our Prāsaṅgika system that we can understand the difference between such things as what is true and false in regard to claims about a god’s body and between an illusory being and an actual being having a mind or not. |
