English

Likewise, even though both traditions are similar in just accepting the necessity of positing all warranted objects by their respective sources of knowledge, there is also a great difference here. What the term “mere” is interpreted to exclude in statements in texts such as the Perfection of Wisdom Sūtras that “all phenomena are mere names and mere designations” is also different. Svātantrikas interpret “mere” to exclude phenomena’s ultimate existence, not their objective existence, whereas Prāsaṅgikas accept that all phenomena are mere names and mere designations, so the “mere” is interpreted to exclude not just true existence, but objective existence as well.
