| English | [IX.116] In the perception of the world . . . 9.116 What follows is how causeless arising is asserted, which is what the non-Buddhist Cārvākas claim. The roots of the Cārvāka philosophical system stem from a person named Lokacakṣu, who studied logic (rtog ge). He composed 100,000 texts on there being no karmic causality, and no past or future lives, because he wanted to have sex with his daughter, etc. His followers are called Cārvākas or “proponents of annihilation.” There are many divisions among them, but in the Grounds (sa sde) it is said that there are two: “the sophists” (rtog ge ba) and “the absorptionists” (snyoms ’jug pa). Within each one of these, there are also annihilationists who accept past and future lives, but not karmic causality, and annihilationists who accept neither past and future lives nor karmic causality. |
