The first stanza shows how other schools that do not accept phenomena to be dependently arisen, but claim that they truly exist, fall into the abyss of the views of permanence and annihilation. The second stanza shows how some in our Buddhist schools, even though they accept entities to be dependently arisen, accept them to be real for the reason that they are dependently arisen; thus, they fall under the power of permanence and annihilation. The last stanza shows how Mādhyamika scholars understand the meaning of dependent arising as the emptiness of intrinsic nature for the reason that phenomena dependently arise based on causes and conditions. Asserting that while empty, there is a manifold display of conventions like the moon reflected in water, they are not hijacked by the views of permanence and annihilation; they do not fall under their power. Like this last stanza, a sūtra says: “The wise realize dependently arisen phenomena; they do not rely on extreme views.”444Candrakīrti cites this (otherwise unidentified) passage in Clear Words, 168a.
