Bhāviveka refuted this, and explained the meaning of the sūtra in his system as the imagined nature not existing on its own ultimately. Others, like [788] Śāntarakṣita, were also in accord with him. Moreover, it is clear that Svātantrikas maintain that phenomena exist on their own conventionally because they understand the Heart Sūtra to be provisional in meaning, and maintain a correct conventional truth. Further, they also accept this because they accept autonomous reasons and theses. This is because the meaning of “autonomous argument” refers to just an instantiation (gzhi ldog) of the triad of logical subject, predicate, and reason (rtags chos don gsum) that is understood to objectively exist; it is not posited as merely a nominal designation. The Lamp of Wisdom explains the meaning of autonomous as existing independently. The Immortal Treasury (Amarakośa) says: “Autonomous, independent, self-powered . . .”423Amarasiṃha, Immortal Treasury (Amarakośa, D. 4299), 207a. For this reason, Clear Words states: “While claiming the Madhyamaka view, to express autonomous probative arguments is understood to be the domain of several major problems . . .”424Candrakīrti, Clear Words, 8b.
