The Meditative Concentration Chapter of our text here designates love and compassion, or the mind that exchanges self and other, as the spirit of awakening, teaching this itself as the observation for calm abiding. Even while practicing the essence of a meditative stabilization on love and so on, it must be practiced by directing the mind to the appropriate observation, then setting, followed by re-setting, and so forth. Specifically, in the practice of calm abiding that observes emptiness as well, the mind is initially directed to the emptiness that is the lack of the objective existence of phenomena and persons, then it is done as before with setting, then re-setting, and so on.
