| English | In short, there are common observations, like the fourfold pervasive observation410The fourfold pervasive observation (khyab pa’i dmigs pa bzhi) is (1) the conceptual image, (2) the nonconceptual image, (3) the extent of entities, and (4) the consummate purpose. See Dungkar Lozang Trinlé, Dungkar’s Dictionary, 326. and so on, and specific observations, like the observation of something like a Tathāgāta’s body, for instance. In either case, the meditative stabilization to be achieved has two qualities: it has a sharpness of strong mental clarity and it has the quality of abiding single-pointedly on the observation without conceptualization. Furthermore, it must remain on the observation continually. For this, it is extremely important to rely on both mindfulness, which prevents distraction elsewhere from the fundamental observation, and meta-awareness, which properly notices whether or not there is distraction. |
