[784] Within these there are four mental engagements (yid byed). There is a tightened mental engagement because there needs to be concentrated effort in the first two mental abidings. Then there is an interrupted mental engagement because one cannot sustain the mind for a long time without being interrupted by laxity or agitation at the time of the fifth mental abiding. There is an uninterrupted mental engagement at the time of the eighth mental abiding because one can sustain the mind for a long time without the interruptions of laxity and agitation. There is an effortless mental engagement at the time of the ninth mental abiding because there is neither disruption nor need to rely on continuous effort. This is explained in accord with the way the six powers and four mental engagements are described in the Disciple Grounds (Śrāvakabhūmi).
