In the same way, do not expel what is foul, like urine, shit, spit, and mucus, in water or fields that are used—whether they be isolated places or not—in order to guard the minds of gods and humans . . . The Pratimokṣa Sūtra says: “In order to avoid bringing someone to lose faith, one should not chew on a toothpick or spit in front of people.”879Bodhisattva Pratimokṣa (H. 249), 87a. This practice of being respectful and cautious is not only conduct that is restricted to those who are practicing celibacy; rather, this should be observed by everyone. To generate fear this sūtra shows that doing such things in front of those practicing celibacy is a severe problem, but is not taught just for those practicing celibacy.
