English	To generate the spirit of awakening in the beginning, the first chapter teaches the benefits because one must develop interest in, and enthusiasm for, the Mahāyāna doctrine through seeing its benefits. Then one must maintain the spirit of awakening through confessing evil deeds, which are discordant conditions for generating the spirit of awakening, and by gathering conducive conditions; these are respectively taught in chapters two and three. After generating the spirit of awakening—the basis for achieving great awakening—the text teaches how to train in its practices in both[p.44]The Great Hum Duckworth, Douglas, trans. For the general way, so that the practices do not diminish, carefulness is important as a method for accepting and rejecting appropriately. This is taught [21] in the fourth chapter. As for the specifics, the fifth chapter teaches how to train in discipline by means of relying upon mindfulness and meta-awareness while practicing the activities of the six perfections. The last four of the perfections (patience and so on) are respectively taught in the next four chapters, beginning with the Patience chapter [chapter 6]. The tenth chapter, specifically through dedication, teaches how to train the mind to give up the body, possessions, and roots of virtue, and thereby how to train in generosity.
