Thus when it is said that the vow cannot be taken again [145] when a defeat occurs for the pratimokṣa vow, it mainly concerns a Hīnayāna[p.228]The Great Hum

disciple. There is an opportunity for a fully ordained monastic with vows in the Mahāyāna to take the pratimokṣa vow again after a defeat occurs. This is the case if it is taken again when a bodhisattva with the pratimokṣa vow has been cultivating the spirit of awakening, as they did previously, and has not been separate from it from the time immediately after the pratimokṣa root downfall occurred until it is taken again. This is stated in the Inquiry of Upāli. Even so, it is not asserted that the pratimokṣa vow can be taken again in the Mahāyāna tradition.
