| English | You might wonder, “Why is it that the pratimokṣa vow cannot be restored while a bodhisattva vow with a defeat can be restored?” Here is the answer: In general, there are those who support the pratimokṣa vows in both the Mahāyāna and the Hīnayāna, so there are both Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna vows of pratimokṣa. Yet the main disciple for whom the vowed disciplines of pratimokṣa are set forth is a person of the Hīnayāna. When such a person takes this vow, whether or not they are able to become an arhat in this life, they take it in order to extinguish contamination in this life. If there is a defeat that is concealed, it will be impossible to become an arhat in that life due to this. So the main purpose for taking the vow has been completely overturned. For a bodhisattva with the bodhisattva vow, if a root downfall occurs, it does not overturn the main purpose of taking the vow. This is said to be the intention of both the Inquiry of Upāli and the Skillful Means Sūtra. |
