| English | For the bodhisattva vow, if a root downfall or defeat occurs, it can be taken again and the vow becomes pure again. The Bodhisattva Grounds says: “A bodhisattva who has taken the vow and lost it has the opportunity to take it again in this life. This is not the case with a fully ordained monastic who has a defeat and simply no opportunity [to take it purely again].”451Asaṅga, Bodhisattva Grounds, 86a; English trans. in Engle, The Bodhisattva’s Path to Unsurpassed Enlightenment, 269.Therefore even if a defeat occurs for a bodhisattva, they can take it again and the vow will be pure. One in the support of the Hīnayāna, in contrast, may take their vow again after incurring a defeat, but that vow is said to not be a pure one. This was a demonstration of the difference between vows that can and cannot be restored. |
