English

Stealing the saffron robes from a quorum—at least four fully ordained monastics who are ordinary beings—is subsumed within the first defeat from the Bodhisattva Grounds. Consequently, here, the monastic who has vows and is the object of the stolen saffron robes must be a monastic who is an ordinary being, and there must be fewer than four monastics. This is because if it were stolen from a spiritual community of a quorum of four, then it would be a repetition of the first defeat from the Bodhisattva Grounds. Therefore it is said that, when there is a quorum of four, this becomes both a downfall and the first root downfall. Thus there are two defeats for stealing the saffron robes and defrocking a monastic.
