Also, the engaged spirit is a main mind (gtso sems), and the vow of the engaged spirit is its accompanying mental event (sems byung). In this way, texts like the Stages of the Path say that through upholding the vow, all cultivations of the spirit of awakening and activities of practice come to be actually embraced by the engaged spirit. This kind of bodhisattva vow should definitely be the support of a vow of Mantra. As supports for both of these, there needs to be the cultivation of the aspirational spirit and an actual pratimokṣa vow, or an abandonment that accords with this vow. It makes no sense to say otherwise. |
