| English | When you see that you can maintain it well, the teacher who is to bestow the vow should be someone who cultivates the aspirational spirit and adheres to the trainings. Also, the teacher should be learned in the Mahāyāna, be able to confer the vow, and be able to retain the words of the supplication. The supplication is made three times: “Noble child, from you . . .”394Asaṅga, Bodhisattva Grounds, 82a; English trans. in Engle, The Bodhisattva’s Path to Unsurpassed Enlightenment, 260–61. Then, to gather the accumulations, the buddhas of the three times are visualized as if they were actually sitting there while the teacher sits on a lion’s throne; offerings of flowers and so on are made, along with the preliminaries of homage and circumambulations, and a maṇḍala and so on are offered. Then the request is urgently made, “Please bestow the vow to me quickly. Next is the cultivation of joy, with the thought, “Soon I will obtain the bodhisattva vow, which is the source of an inexhaustible, unexcelled treasury of merit!” Then the one bestowing the vow asks the one to whom it is conferred, “Are you a bodhisattva?” and asks about obstacles.
