This is not like it is in the case with the Vinaya because here you should know through studying well the full extent of the trainings before taking the vow. When the mind becomes firm in the trainings through practicing and wanting to train in them, then the vow is taken. With these attitudes in place, the vow is taken; the vow is not taken otherwise. This is stated in[p.203]The Great Hum
Duckworth, Douglas, trans. The Great Hūṃ: A Commentary on Śāntideva's Way of the Bodhisattva. By Minyak Kunzang Sönam. New York, NY: Wisdom Publications, 2025.
the Compendium of Determinations.392See Asaṅga, Compendium of Determinations (Viniścayasaṃgrahanī, D. 4038), 38b. It says in the Explanation of the Discipline Chapter that the vow is not to be given to those who do not wish to practice the bodhisattva trainings nor cultivate the aspirational spirit.393Tsongkhapa, Highway to Awakening, 31b; English trans. in Tatz, Asanga’s Chapter on Ethics, 140.
