Moreover, the master Bodhibhadra and the great scholar Abhayākaragupta integrated the traditions of the two great chariots. Others, like Jetāri, accepted the position of the Madhyamaka tradition that set forth generating the aspirational spirit and taking the vow in two stages. In a commentary on the Anthology of Sūtras and commentary on the Way of the Bodhisattva, Kṛṣṇapa also set forth the rituals for the aspirational and engaged spirit separately. In this way, in the practices of the previous Kadampa spiritual friends, first the aspirational spirit was adopted through a ritual, and after it was stabilized, the ritual for the vow was performed later. The precious Lord Tsongkhapa said that this was an unexcelled and excellent method for making the vow firm.388See Tsongkhapa, Highway to Awakening, 30b; English trans. in Tatz, Asanga’s Chapter on Ethics, 139. Kunzang Sönam’s discussion in this section draws closely upon Tsongkhapa’s text.
