As for the second assertion, certain lower schools say that the inner apprehender has no external apprehended object that is substantially different from itself and that the dependent nature as such—empty of a substantially different apprehended object and an apprehending subject—exists. But by what means is this known? Proof should be supplied for such an assertion. For one cannot accept the existence of something that is not validly apprehended. Saying that it is proven by the self-cognizing mind itself, they believe that a self-experiencing mind exists. This, however, is not correct. For if, as these people say, the mind establishes itself as an existent thing [which it would if it had no external apprehended object], it follows that the object and the subject and the action itself all become one. And however you may examine something engaging in an action on itself, such a thing cannot occur in something that is one and partless. On the contrary, it is as the sutra says, “The sword’s blade cannot cut the sword; the fingertip cannot touch the fingertip. In the same way, a given state of mind cannot see itself.” It is thus that such a theory is inescapably invalidated by scripture and reasoning. If these theorists protest that the self-knowing mind is proved by a subsequent and inherently existing recollection, our answer is that an inherently existing recollection cannot establish the self-knowing mind, for the simple reason that it is not established. The self-knowing mind is indeed[p.313]The Wisdom Chapter

dependent on what is already established. It therefore follows that an object experienced by memory cannot logically be a recollection because [present] experience and memory [of something past] are inherently different. As it is said in the Madhyamakāvatāra,
