Regarding the first, certain of the lower Buddhist schools—those who accept the consciousness of the universal ground—believe that it is necessary to accept that such a consciousness exists inherently. For if it does not exist, there is no underlying basis for good and evil action. According to the Prāsaṅgika tradition, however, the consciousness of the universal ground has no existence; it is sufficient to posit as the basis of the karmic process just the “I” that is imputed on the assemblage of the five aggregates. For this reason, the consciousness of the universal ground is not accepted even on the conventional level. For it serves no purpose.
