Their answer to this is given in stanza 46, “‘Only for a while,’ you say. ‘For it is certain that they have no craving that will make them take rebirth.’” The Shrāvakas retort that it is certain that they (the Arhats) will not take further rebirth by the power of their karma. For craving, which is the interdependent condition for taking existence, has been exhausted through meditating on the path of impermanence and so on. In answer to this, Shāntideva says (in stanzas 46 and 47), “This craving that they have indeed is not defiled; but why should they not have a craving that is like their ignorance? It is a craving that arises through the circumstance of feeling, and feeling, this they surely have.” In other words, although this craving in the continua of those whom the Shrāvakas consider to be Arhats is not defiled, nevertheless—just as it is explained in the Abhidharma that there are two kinds of ignorance, one that is defiled and one that is not defiled—in the same way, in the case of craving, why should the [supposed] Arhats not have two cravings, one that is defiled in the manner explained in the Abhidharma and one that is not [so] defiled? Accordingly, even if the path previously explained (the momentary discarding of the manifest craving elicited by the kind of self-clinging that is a grasping at an autonomous and substantial person) has occurred in the mind-stream of those beings, why should the latter still not have also a craving elicited by the view of the transitory collection that clings to the person as inherently existing? Those whom the Shrāvakas take to be Arhats do not realize emptiness; they do not abandon even the manifest ignorance of clinging to a feeling according to its characteristics. circumstance of feeling, why should there not occur the craving of not wanting to be deprived of happiness and of wanting to be free from suffering? For when the list of causes and conditions is complete, it is certain that the result will manifest.
