These lines also show that the mind that is enmeshed in clinging to true existence cannot be liberated. Subsequently, when we get to the first two lines of stanza 45, “If through removal of defilement you are freed, your freedom should occur at once,” if it is said that the realization of emptiness is unnecessary and that it is through meditating on impermanence and the rest of the sixteen aspects that defilement is completely discarded and liberation attained, it follows that as soon as one has temporarily suspended manifest defilement [an event that occurs] through the path of meditating on impermanence and the rest of the sixteen aspects, one arrives immediately at the level of Arhat. For this is what the Shrāvakas claim. On the other hand, they cannot hold this view because, as Shāntideva replies, “Yet those who are without defilement still behold the influence of karma.” That is, although they are, for the time being, without manifest defilement, they will still behold the power of karma that will throw them into a further (samsaric) existence.
