| English | In fact, these texts show by implication that the Shrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas have a realization of the no-self of phenomena. There is no difference between the two kinds of self-clinging in that both are the root of samsara. As long as the conceived objects of these two clingings are not refuted, there is no liberation from cyclic existence. And since no one would ever say that the Shrāvaka and Pratyekabuddha Arhats are not liberated from samsara, it is perfectly clear that the Shrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas both gain a direct realization of the two kinds of no-self. It is in accordance with this interpretation that the great Bodhisattva Shāntideva [reports the Shrāvakas as saying in stanza 40], “We’re free through seeing the [four] truths—What use is it to us, this view of emptiness?” thus implying that if one is liberated simply through the path of realizing impermanence and the rest of the sixteen aspects of the four noble truths, it serves no purpose to realize emptiness in order to bring about the exhaustion of defilement. In these lines and the last two lines taken from stanza 40 of the text (“But as the scriptures have themselves proclaimed”), together with the four lines of stanza 44 (beginning “The true monk is the root of Dharma”), he (Shāntideva) says that if one is without this path of realizing emptiness, none of the three enlightenments will occur.[p.299]The Wisdom Chapter |
