| English | At the present time, a certain commentator on the Bodhicaryāvatāra has said that when Shāntideva says (45cd), “Yet those who are without defilement still behold the influence of karma,” it is incorrect to add the rider that such beings are liberated by discarding only manifest defilement. But this pretended refutation is like an attack made by a beggar on a king. I do not see that our position is in any way harmed by it. For the question of whether or not [the Shrāvaka adepts] are subject to the power of karma is a question of whether or not they are subject to the power of being projected into future (samsaric) existences. And this question is, in turn, part of the debate about whether one can gain liberation from samsara simply through the path of meditating on impermanence and so on. |
