In the same way, let us suppose that [Shāntideva] did actually adduce the consequential argument “It follows that one is liberated through the removal of merely manifest defilement.” If an opponent, who, believing that one is not liberated by abandoning merely manifest defilement,56It should be remembered that the Shrāvakas do not of course think that liberation occurs when only manifest defilement is temporarily suppressed. On the contrary, they claim that through successfully meditating on the sixteen aspects of the four noble truths, they succeed in removing all defilement and thereby attain arhatship. And Shāntideva is dealing with them on those terms. It may well be Tsongkhapa’s opinion that the Shrāvakas do not in fact succeed in eliminating anything except manifest defilement through meditating on the sixteen aspects, but this is not something that the Shrāvakas believe about themselves. were to reply that he accepted the argument that one is free from the moment that merely manifest defilements are abandoned—such an opponent, who said that those who thus abandon manifest defilement are definitively free of the craving liable to cast them into further existence, would be a fool. And it would not be appropriate for Shāntideva to refute such an idiot.
