Now Drakar may think: No, the answer that the Shrāvaka opponent has given is that “We are liberated by the realization of impermanence and the rest of the sixteen aspects.” But if the statement in the root text “Your freedom should occur immediately” is not applied to the discarding of merely manifest defilement, Drakar must then consider how [the rider “merely manifest”] is to be applied.57Drakar Tulku, following Tsongkhapa and Gyaltsap, wishes to interpolate the idea of the temporary suspension of merely manifest defilement into the result that the Shrāvakas claim to achieve through their meditation on the four noble truths. But if this is done, Mipham says, the debate recorded in stanza 45 is reduced to a series of non sequiturs. If, in order to defend himself, Drakar now returns to the original statement given by the Shrāvakas in stanza 41, what becomes of his qualification “merely manifest”? Where is he inserting it?
