Now just as it is impossible for anyone to reply “I accept” to the person adducing the unwanted consequence,54For if they did, they would be admitting defeat and the debate would be over. in the same way, here, the (Shrāvaka) opponent, who is being pushed into replying “I accept,” in fact cannot do so. And Drakar should then consider carefully whether the subsequent rejoinder (“Yet those who are without defilement still behold the influence of karma) is tenably adduced.55Shāntideva’s introduction of the second part of the argument (although the Arhats have no defilement, they still experience the effects of karma) only makes sense if the Shrāvakas accept the first part of the argument (if freedom occurs when defilements are abandoned, freedom must occur immediately). But if, as Drakar says, the consequential argument is that freedom occurs as soon as only manifest defilements are removed, the Shrāvakas would rightly reject such a rejoinder. They would say that there is no pervasion because they themselves have never said that they think that only manifest defilements are removed by the realization of the four truths. And since the consequential argument in the first two lines of stanza 45 is thus refused, Shāntideva’s rejoinder (“Yet those who are without defilement . . .”) becomes irrelevant and pointless.
