If he thinks that the Shrāvakas’ assertion that they are freed through the path of realizing impermanence and the rest of the sixteen aspects is to be taken as the evidential sign, whereas the words “If through removal of defilement you are freed” are not so taken, it follows that if one is liberated by the path of meditating on impermanence and the rest, one is liberated from the moment that merely manifest defilements are removed. But this is only an expression of [Drakar Tulku’s] opinion. Given that such an evidential sign and pervasion are nowhere evident, either directly or by implication, the statement in the root text “If through removal of defilement you are freed, your freedom must occur at once” becomes a consequence irrelevant to the argument, and the author of the text is shown to be incompetent in the way he expresses himself. But could such an inadequate way of speaking be attributed to someone like Shāntideva?
