The qualification “merely manifest” does not figure in the wording of[p.218]The Wisdom Chapter
Fletcher, Wulstan, and Helena Blankleder (Padmakara Translation Group), trans. The Wisdom Chapter: Jamgön Mipham's Commentary on the Ninth Chapter of "The Way of the Bodhisattva." Boulder, CO: Shambhala Publications, 2017.
Shāntideva’s text. But if, according to one’s interpretation of the meaning, one adds it earlier in the argument, ahead of the statement that one must be freed immediately, it follows that when the Shrāvakas affirm that they are freed through the complete abandonment of defilement, one understands them to mean that they are freed as soon as manifest defilements are abandoned. But if to their assertion that they are freed through the complete abandonment [of defilement], one returns the consequence to the effect that they are freed through abandoning manifest [defilement], one is in effect demonstrating that the defects of evident contradiction and irrelevance are present in the text of the Bodhicaryāvatāra itself. Drakar Tulku should consider whether this is a good way of commenting.52Normally commentary should elucidate the text, not undermine its manifest meaning by showing it to be incoherent.
