| English | When this argument is examined, unless the qualification “manifest” is explicitly added to the evidential sign,50That is, “because it is through meditating on the path of realizing impermanence . . . that manifest defilements are exhausted and arhatship achieved.” the latter becomes a statement unconnected with the proposition just cited. Generally, in relation to the (consequential) argument “If through removal of defilement you are freed, you ought to be—it follows that you are—freed at once,” if one speaks in a way that does not proceed according to the traditional explanation, which takes this to be a reference to the Arhats with remainder, this consequence cannot be leveled at [Shāntideva’s] Shrāvaka opponent.51The Gelugpa interpretation rejects the classic exegesis of Shāntideva’s words (found in the Indian commentaries), which takes them to be a reference to the Arhats with remainder. And yet, in his debate with the Shrāvakas, it is quite natural for Shāntideva to refer to the Arhats, since they are mentioned in both scripture and Abhidharma and are directly concerned in any attainment of nirvana in the Hīnayāna sense. Moreover, it is by alluding to these Arhats that Shāntideva can illustrate his point of view by pointing out that though they have attained arhatship, they are manifestly not omniscient Buddhas. Be that as it may—Mipham argues—since Drakar, following Gyaltsap and Tsongkhapa, has abandoned this interpretation and understands the passage differently, he is unable to make sense of Shāntideva’s consequential argument unless he forces the text by introducing a qualification (manifest defilements) not made by Shāntideva, thereby introducing a series of exegetical difficulties. |
