It may be argued that in stanza 45 of the root text, which begins “If through removal of defilement you are freed,” the Shrāvakas are recorded as saying that they do not need to realize emptiness; it is through meditating on the path of realizing impermanence and the rest of the sixteen aspects [of the four noble truths] that liberation and the fruit of arhatship are attained. But [according to Drakar and the Gelugpas] the text of this stanza is to be interpreted in terms of the following consequential argument. “It follows [absurdly] that the person who temporarily abandons manifest defilement attains the state of arhatship as soon as the manifest defilements are abandoned, because it is through meditating on the path of realizing impermanence and the rest of the sixteen aspects that defilements are exhausted and arhatship achieved.”
