Here, Drakar Tulku [and the Gelugpas generally] are indeed making a very considerable claim. They are rejecting as defective the scriptural tradition of the great chariots! Since this is so, I request them not to be so outraged if a few people dissent from a position that is held by them alone. To be sure, Indian texts are not by definition to be regarded as trustworthy.49That is, simply because they are Indian. However, when the texts of many great Indian paṇditas of high renown—Prajñākaramati and others—are all in perfect agreement, I am inclined to think that they surely possess intact the explanatory lineage from Shāntideva himself. I think too that, in all probability, since their analytical intelligence was, at the very least, no worse than that of the ordinary run of Tibetans, their explanation was not necessarily inferior to that of Tibetan scholars who accommodate the text in the interests of an easy understanding. With this in mind, I will examine to see if there is anything in [Drakar Tulku’s] tradition that reasoning can undermine.
