Stanza 54 is Shāntideva’s final reply to the Shrāvakas who, ten stanzas previously, had declared that they have no need of emptiness. It completes the description of the Shrāvaka Arhats who (at least in the interpretation of the Indian commentators), while being liberated from samsara, are projected into the absorption of cessation and do not, for the moment, attain buddhahood. |
