This and other passages demonstrate in more extensive detail that the aggregates that appear as the objects of the sense powers are themselves made up of parts and that the assemblages of such parts have no reality in themselves. This is extensively demonstrated also by the venerable Chandrakīrti, who says that the Shrāvakas certainly need to realize the coarse no-self of the aggregates.41The coarse no-self of the aggregates is the fact that the aggregates, identified as “form,” “feeling,” and so forth, are themselves labels imputed on agglomerations of particles. It is the understanding that the aggregates are unreal in relation to the real particles. By contrast, the subtle no-self of the aggregates is the realization that the particles, the basis for the imputation, are themselves without ultimate existence. According to Mipham, Chandrakīrti says that the realization of the coarse no-self of the aggregates is within the range of the Shrāvakayāna. By contrast, the subtle no-self of the aggregates is expounded only in the Mahāyāna. See Ketaka Jewel, p. 121.He makes this clear when, for example, he says that the Bodhisattvas also realize it, and so forth. The sutra also says, “Form is like a bursting bubble,” showing that the teaching of the no-self of phenomena is to be found also in the tradition of the Shrāvakas. All this figures in the autocommentary to the Madhyamakāvatāra.
