True, the Madhyamaka texts do strongly refute the self-knowing mind, but this is only on the ultimate level; they do not refute it on the conventional level. It is just as with the mind cognizing things other than itself. And the reason for this is that, if it is refuted, and its existence denied, even on the conventional level, it would have to be clearly invalidated—just like eternal sound or the Creator God—by the kind of logic that examines the conventional level. But this is impossible.189In other words, if the self-cognizing mind were refuted as being nonexistent even on the conventional level, it would have to be refuted not only by reasoning aiming at the ultimate (don dam dpyod byed kyi rigs pa) but also by reasoning aiming at the conventional (tha snyad dpyod byed kyi rig pa). In that case, it would be on the same level as dragons, unicorns, and other figments of the imagination. In order to disprove the existence of the self-cognizing mind on the conventional level, one would have to produce arguments based on logical impossibility (like the son of a barren mother) or on empirical fact (as with the horns of a rabbit). Neither of these investigations would work for the self-cognizing mind since, on the one hand, its conventional existence entails no intrinsic illogicality, and on the other hand, the belief in its existence is supported by plenty of circumstantial evidence.
