Now, regarding the teaching on the personal no-self and the teaching on the phenomenal no-self (the emptiness of the aggregates and so forth), it is only the basis of emptiness [whether the person or phenomena] that is different; the manner in which both are empty is the same. Furthermore, in order to realize the emptiness of a dependently arising self, it is necessary to understand beforehand that the coarse aggregates themselves also have a merely imputed existence and do not exist substantially. This shows how the matter is established by reasoning, thanks to which the state of mind that does not accept emptiness or the phenomenal no-self is overthrown. Emptiness so-called is nothing other than the absence of intrinsic being in dependently arising things. If the Shrāvakas did not in any way accept this, there would be no way for them to realize even the nonexistence of the personal self.
