| English | They must refute the innate view of the transitory collection (their clinging to the self imputed on the basis of the aggregates as if it were intrinsically existent). For even though they may understand that a self and so on that is permanent, individual, and independent does not exist, it is not by this alone that they will be liberated.113It is important to bear in mind that there are two kinds of self-clinging: the clinging to the imputed self (btags pa’i bdag ’dzin) and the clinging to the “innate sense of self ” (lhan skyes kyi bdag ’dzin). Once again, the first is a matter of reflection and philosophical or religious belief. It is built up anew in each successive existence and is confined to beings capable of rational thought. It is moreover comparatively easy to remove, since its falsehood may be demonstrated by a process of logical reasoning. By contrast, the innate sense of self, referred to here as the innate view of the transitory collection, is a profound habitual tendency, instilled in the mind from beginningless time. It is the root of samsaric existence. It accompanies the mind from one life to another and is present from the lowest forms of animal existence to the peak of existence in the highest states of the gods of the formless realm. When arhatship, the definitive liberation that is the fruit of the Shrāvaka path, is achieved, this innate clinging to self and a fortiori the clinging to the imputed self are completely annihilated. As long as such clinging remains, liberation or arhatship is impossible. Indeed, logic demonstrates that [without the dissipation of the view of the transitory collection] they are like the non-Buddhist adepts who are free from attachment. |
