The remaining sixteen evolutes are modulations (effects) alone, and puruṣa is neither nature (cause) nor modulation (effect). Thus nature and the modulations combine according to four permutations.80Of the four permutations, prakṛti belongs exclusively to that of producing. Mahat, ahaṁkāra, and the five tanmātras belong to the category of produced and producing. The other sixteen modulations, or evolutes, belong only to the category of produced, while puruṣa is neither produced nor producing.
