English

Puruṣa is consciousness, while all the others factors are material. Both prakṛti and puruṣa are eternal. Therefore pleasure and so forth are of the nature of outer, material things. Although they do not belong to the substance of inner consciousness (manas), they appear nevertheless to the mind, or mahat, and when they are enjoyed or experienced by the self, they cannot be separated from it—for which reason they are thought of as properties of the self. Such is the doctrine of the Sāṁkhyas, who thus believe that the self is conscious. By contrast, the Vaisheshikas and others believe that it is material. This being so, when these two [contrary] views are refuted, all other [intermediary] views are eliminated as well.
