Again, it might be thought that there is nothing wrong in differentiating the craving into two kinds in response to the Shrāvaka interlocutors and showing that while they do not have the first kind, they do have the second. But since the Shrāvakas make no such specific distinction, the general import of the words "this craving that they have indeed is not defiled” and "like their ignorance” can only be to demonstrate that they do have a craving that is undefiled. How can it show that they (still) have a defiled craving? Such an interpretation fails to do justice to the meaning of the words. Moreover, forestalling any doubt through the use of an example,76That is, by saying "like their ignorance” (kun rmongs bzhin du). Shāntideva asks the rhetorical question "But why should they not have [a craving that is like their ignorance]?” in order to demonstrate his own position. Defective and unconnected statements of the kind proposed earlier, about what is supposed to be in the text and the arguments for its being there, are not to be found anywhere or at any time in the teaching of this great master.
