Now certain texts say that it is necessary to add "merely manifest” to "defilements,”69That is, in stanza 45, "If through removal of [merely manifest] defilement you are freed, your freedom should occur at once.” and that it is not admissible to interpret this text as referring to the Arhats.70See, for example, Tsongkhapa’s commentary on the Madhyamakāvatāra and the commentary on the Bodhicaryāvatāra by Gyaltsap Dharma Rinchen. This however is just a case of forcing the root text so as to make it comply with the opinion expressed in those texts. The opponent in the debate (the Shrāvakas) are not themselves asserting that they are liberated through the abandonment of merely manifest defilements, with the result that the consequence being leveled at them becomes irrelevant. Moreover, all the Indian commentaries are unanimous in saying that this passage refers to the Arhats like Maudgalyāyana.71That is, all the eight Indian commentaries translated into Tibetan and preserved in the Tengyur. Consequently, this is an important key point of the text and is also established by reasoning. It is therefore not open to speculation.72Tsongkhapa’s view, as expressed in the eight difficult points, or special propositions, of the Prāsaṅgika teaching, is that the practitioners of the lesser vehicle need to have a full realization of the phenomenal no-self in order to attain arhatship, the complete liberation from samsara. When he discusses this matter in the Dgongs pa rab bsal, his commentary on the Madhyamakāvatāra, he pointedly cites the present passage of the "Wisdom Chapter” as a proof text. According to him, this stanza does not refer to the Arhats. Shāntideva’s interlocutors in the debate are merely deluded Hīnayāna practitioners who mistakenly think that they gain liberation through the abandonment of "merely manifest” defilement. According to Mipham, this interpretation is mistaken on two counts. First, it clearly diverges from the consensus of the Indian commentaries, notably that of Prajñākaramati, which unanimously declare that this stanza does refer to the Arhats. Second, the argument is itself faulty, Mipham believes, since it requires the intercalation of the rider "merely manifest” in a position where there is no reason to suppose that Shāntideva intended it. This point is discussed at length in Question 3 of Mipham’s reply to Drakar Tulku.
