| English | It is taught that prayers of aspiration are the main factor.48That is, aspirations made by the Buddhas while they were still on the path. They are the principal cause for the various appearances of the forms, retinues, pure fields, and so on, of the Tathāgatas. For these appear through the cooperating conditions occasioned by whatever aspirations were made on the path of learning. Indeed, when the buddha element or sugatagarbha—the complete and utmost purity, the dharmadhātu, the suchness wherein emptiness and appearance are united—is perfectly actualized, bringing to term the three-fold process of perfecting (the accumulations), bringing beings to maturity, and accomplishing (pure fields),49Tib. rdzogs smin sbyangs gsum. Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche explained that, in this context, sbyangs, which normally means to purify, has the sense of "to accomplish” (sgrub), referring to the capacity of enlightened beings to produce pure fields (Sukhavati, and so on). this in itself is called the "inconceivable wisdom body.” And in accordance with the karmic fortune of beings and through the power of former aspirations, this manifests uninterruptedly in various miraculous ways for the sake of beings. This is spoken of in the Uttaratantra-śāstra: |
