It is just as with the wish-fulfilling jewel and the tree of miracles, which while not having the intention to benefit anyone, nevertheless perfectly satisfy the hopes of those who pray before them. In the same way, through the power of their former aspirations, Buddhas appear to beings in forms that are appropriate to their needs and constantly deploy their activities for the happiness and good of all, teaching the Dharma and so on. One who has attained the ultimate nirvana, which never stirs from the dharmadhātu and in which all the exertions of the path of learning are completely stilled, experiences no thought of exertion. Nevertheless, enlightened activities occur for the sake of others. This has been illustrated by the wishing jewel and so on, as well as by the eight further examples such as the reflection of Indra.47These eight examples are given in the Uttaratantra-shastra (Rgyud bla ma). The glory of Indra’s image reflected in the crystal floor before him has the real but unintended effect of effortlessly inspiring those who bow before him with respect and the desire to emulate him.
