can the aspects be separate from it?31Here, the Tibetan texts reads ji ltar na rnam pa de gzhan min te, which means "how can the aspects not be separate from it?” But this reading is incoherent with the argument that follows. The rhetorical question is naturally "How can the aspects be separate from it?” We suggest therefore that the Tibetan text contains a scribal error and that the verb yin should be substituted for its negative form min. For they say that the aspects are not real things whereas the mind is; and there is no possible basis common to existent and nonexistent things. Frightened by this objection, the Chittamatrins are forced to admit that the aspects are not, after all, separate from the mind. But in that case, it follows that the mind is unreal too—being at one with its unreal aspects.
