Description
In this scripture Śākyamuni Buddha describes how a bodhisattva should ideally train in the six perfections. In the Veṇuvana near Rājagṛha, the Buddha teaches this sūtra in response to a single question put to him by the bodhisattva Subāhu: what are the qualities a bodhisattva should have in order to progress to perfect awakening? The Buddha responds by first listing the six perfections of generosity, ethical discipline, patience, diligence, concentration, and insight, and then expounding in greater detail on each perfection in turn. The Subāhuparipṛcchāsūtrobhavapraṇidhāna ("The Aspirational Prayer Taken from the Sūtra of the Questions of Subāhu") is an anonymous aspirational prayer extracted from the Subāhuparipṛcchāsūtra and preserved in the Tengyur (RKTST 3715). The prayer is a first-person bodhisattva aspiration encompassing the full range of Mahāyāna practice: offering one's body to the buddhas and bodhisattvas throughout all directions, making infinite aspirations across future lives, fulfilling the six perfections, maintaining ethical conduct, teaching the Dharma to all beings, and never turning back from the path to enlightenment. The prayer concludes with the aspiration to train in all the virtues of the bodhisattvas and buddhas and to establish all worlds within the teachings.
