Description

The Caturaṅgadharmacaryā' ("Four-branched Dharma Practice") is a short liturgical text by Śrī Jagatmitrānanda (Mitrayogin), translated into Tibetan by the author himself together with the translator Byams pa'i dpal. It presents a fourfold practice structure intended to be performed in sequence:
  1. Taking Refuge — a formal refuge formula in the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha, framed as the foundation of practice.
  2. Confession — acknowledgment of all negative actions accumulated since beginningless time through body, speech, and mind, expressed with regret and a resolve to restrain oneself going forward, for the purpose of purifying the mental continuum.
  3. Rejoicing — sympathetic appreciation of the virtuous acts of buddhas, bodhisattvas, śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, and ordinary beings throughout all directions of space, praised as a means of generating great merit with little effort.
  4. Generating Bodhicitta — arousing the mind of awakening following the example of past protectors, explicitly for the benefit of all sentient beings (framed as "all mothers"), aimed at attaining unsurpassable awakening.

The text closes with a dedication verse directing the accumulated merit toward the pacification of all beings' afflictions and their attainment of the state of "guru of the world" ('gro ba'i bla ma).
