FULL TEXT
Description
The Caturaṅgadharmacaryā' ("Four-branched Dharma Practice") is a short liturgical text by Śrī Jagatmitrānanda (Mitrayogin), translated into Tibetan by the author himself together with the translator Byams pa'i dpal. It presents a fourfold practice structure intended to be performed in sequence:
- Taking Refuge — a formal refuge formula in the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha, framed as the foundation of practice.
- Confession — acknowledgment of all negative actions accumulated since beginningless time through body, speech, and mind, expressed with regret and a resolve to restrain oneself going forward, for the purpose of purifying the mental continuum.
- Rejoicing — sympathetic appreciation of the virtuous acts of buddhas, bodhisattvas, śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, and ordinary beings throughout all directions of space, praised as a means of generating great merit with little effort.
- Generating Bodhicitta — arousing the mind of awakening following the example of past protectors, explicitly for the benefit of all sentient beings (framed as "all mothers"), aimed at attaining unsurpassable awakening.
