Description
Āryaśālistambakaṭīkā (Tib. 'Phags pa sā lu ljang pa rgya cher 'grel pa; Toh 4001), by Kamalaśīla, is a commentary on the Śālistambasūtra (Rice Seedling Sūtra). Kamalaśīla reads the sūtra's teaching on dependent origination through the Madhyamaka framework of the two truths: phenomena are ultimately unarisen but conventionally arise from causes and conditions, like an illusion or a reflection. On this basis he refutes non-Buddhist theories of causation such as creation by Īśvara, time, or Sāṃkhya's primordial nature, and he presents the bodhisattva's nonabiding nirvāṇa, sustained by wisdom and compassion together. It is one of three canonical commentaries on the sūtra preserved in the Tengyur, alongside Nāgārjuna's Śālistambakakārikā (Toh 3985) and Śālistambakamahāyānasūtraṭīkā (Toh 3986).

In this sūtra, at the request of venerable Śāriputra, the bodhisattva mahāsattva Maitreya elucidates a very brief teaching on dependent arising that the Buddha had given earlier that day while gazing at a rice seedling. The text discusses outer and inner causation and its conditions, describes in detail the twelvefold cycle by which inner dependent arising gives rise to successive lives, and explains how understanding the very nature of that process can lead to freedom from it.
